DOOM Venice, built on ancient poles out in the Med, defies its very existence. In fact it is sinking into the ocean but plans are underway to keep it afloat. Venice is not your ordinary city in any respect. It is more like a set with a shadow of doom as props. A long time ago it mixed obscenely lavish masquerades in its palaces, with its dirty alleys of plague. Life, mixed with death, has made its mark in the city and literature.

ROMANCE No noisy trafic, only winding alleys and bridges over the canals where the gondolieres steer their shining black craft. Many a couple walk hand in hand or lean on the satin cushions of the gondolas. The soul of Venice keep the weekend break from getting too syrupy sweet. But don't count on being alone on the known Rialto bridge. Try to go there in May-June or September. The tourists may not trample you and the seasons floods may not be underway.

WALKING DISTANCE Weekend breaks to Venice don't just give you an experience to die for. It's also the perfect weekend spot since you'll walk in car free quarters. Beware though, that prices are higher than in other parts of Italy.
