THE SMART GUIDE TO WEEKEND BREAKS IN EUROPE

Stockholm

Stockholm usually rocks first time visitors. Who would have known there was such a beautiful city so far north! It's built on several islands and the sea is never far away. That explains much of the scenery you will enjoy on a weekend break.

THE CITY'S PARTS As it's built on islands, many of the city's parts are quite separate not only in geography but also in style. For example, Östermalm is the home of the bourgeoisie with straight avenues and chic boutiques. Exactly the opposite, Södermalm is the old working class neighbourhood that has turned into the bohemian dirty chic, with culture workers and media people from all over the world crowding out the original inhabitants. And restaurants and bars to feed and water them.

GAMLA STAN The city's old town, Gamla Stan, is situated on the original island of the city. You'll find the Royal Castle there, but also myriads of narrow alleys and walkways. If you can evade the worst tourist crowds, you will get a medieval atmosphere. Find the little triangular square "Brända tomten" and enjoy a moment on a bench.

THE VASA MUSEUM If you never go to museums you should make one exception. The Vasa Museum is built around an unfortunate regal ship that was launched in 1628, and sunk straight away due to a poor design. The ship is completely preserved and the museum is stunning. The Vasa Museum is situated at the fairy tale island Djurgården, along with open air museum Skansen and the amusement park Gröna Lund. This, and the rest of Stockholm, will make you plan more weekend breaks to the city.
