Amsterdam weekend breaks never fail. There's enough time to get around the city's central parts, and it's full to the rim of things to see and do. Keep an open mind in the colourful city, and it will reward you.

DIVERSITY Weekend breaks mean limited time. Don't waste it on the central shopping streets. Instead, keep right when you've got your back to the central train station. It will get you to Jordaan, a part of the city which stands up to conformity. It has lots of specialized boutiques, galleries and second hand shops. You can wander an entire day and, when the walking gets tedious, rest in one of the brown (classic) or white (modern) Amsterdam cafés. Jordaan also hosts the best restaurants, and some exciting outdoor markets. And remember, even the (in)famous coffee shops actually serve coffee.

HISTORY You won't be alone at the Anne Frank museum, but it's worth the wait to catch a glimpse of the claustrophobia of oppression. You actually visit the very rooms where the Frank family hid from the Nazis for five long years. For a better mood, move on to the Van Gogh Musem. Lose yourself in the vibrant colours of the master for a few hours.

FREEDOM AND TOLERANCE Amsterdam is the city of tolerance. You can feel it. All kinds of people mix and you won't see many raised eyebrows or fearful glances. However, some Amsterdam residents complain that the openness is shallow. Anyhow, check out the city for yourself and make up your own mind. Amsterdam is the perfect destination for weekend breaks.
